Greetings. Dr. Stephie here. I want to ask you a provocative question: What is the price you pay for going on vacation? Your answer to that question is a great indicator of how hard it is for you to delegate, grow, and pass on what you do.
I recently began working with a professional who canceled his vacation on short notice because a client really needed him. Think about that. He canceled his vacation!
Many other people who do go on vacation work like mad to get ready for it. They make sure that all their work is in the best order possible. When they come back, there’s a mountain of work they must address.
When you think about it, if you go on vacation for a few days, a week, two weeks, or even more than two weeks, whatever pain points you find are telling. Multiply that pain by a large number – that is the pain other people will face when you are no longer there.
That is unless, of course, you prepare. That preparation involves extracting the brilliance. As I have said before, it is pulling your wisdom, knowledge, and expertise out of your brain and putting it into a training system.
You prepare your training system so that it works for the kind of person you expect to receive that training. Then there are two more steps:
- You need to find a suitable person to train (or several of them).
- It would help if you also created a culture where that systematic brilliance extraction and knowledge transfer are part of the culture.
I will do another nugget on that, but today, think about this: What is the price you or other people on your team pay for going on vacation?
