What are the enormous advantage humans have compared to the smartest machines? Or are we kidding ourselves? Are we going to get eventually cast aside by those very machines we have created with artificial intelligence?

- Do human brains have an enormous advantage over even the smartest machines?
- Or are we kidding ourselves?
- Are we going to get eventually cast aside by the very machines with artificial intelligence we have created?
There’s some debate about that. There’s no doubt that some of the jobs people have held historically, even recently, either have been replaced or are in the process of being replaced.
I think we can take heart because one thing these smart machines cannot do is they do not have intentionality. That is the statement made by Steven Sloman and Philip Fehrenbach in the book “The Knowledge Illusion: Why We Never Think Alone.”
One of the key insights in this book is that humans have intentionality while machines are much better at storing information and processing vast amounts of information quickly.
Machines do not have the power of intentionality. For example, a GPS can get you quickly from point A to B. It can figure out the fastest route, given all kinds of circumstances. These circumstances are even changing in real-time. A human is not that good at that, but intentionality, why we even want to go from point A to point B, that’s a whole different story.
I’m Curious
Given that intentionality is the human superpower or at least one of them, that brings up the question. How intentional are you in what you’re doing on a daily basis? Great food for thought.
