Sunday Is Fun Day: NASCAR, Rednecks, And Being “Adult”

After publishing over 260 Brilliant Nuggets, I thought it might be fun to do something new like going to a NASCAR event. I am declaring Sunday as a fun day. I will challenge myself to come up with something funny on Sundays! Now, considering that I’m German this may prove to be challenging. We will see how that goes. 🙂

Greetings, Dr. Stephie here. Well, after over 260 Brilliant Nuggets, I thought it might be fun to do something new and declare Sunday a fun day. I will challenge myself to come up with something funny, although, as some of you know (my Toastmasters friends, in particular) I have admitted that Germans don’t have humor. (Is that really true? I apologize to all other Germans for this horrible generalization.) So, don’t expect this to be too funny.

Our family was at NASCAR over the weekend at the Texas Motor Speedway. At the entrance to the infield, we got a bracelet. The bracelet says, “ADULT.”

I suppose they want you to remember that you are an adult and better behave as such, at least today. I thought that was a pretty funny interpretation of it. Then again, I’m German, and I cling to anything that could be humorous.

Furthermore, though, I remembered that periodically friends of mine say, “What, Stephie, you are going to a NASCAR? Isn’t that for rednecks?” That makes me think of two things:

  1. What are rednecks anyway? Yes. I know in the past, it had something to do with working in the fields and getting the sun to shine on your neck a lot. You get a red neck, which makes you a redneck. But now the redneck connotation has something to do with how smart you are. There still seems to be this notion that people who go to NASCAR are rednecks and not all that smart.
  2. I wonder whether the people who say that have ever been at a NASCAR event, especially on the infield, because it’s a big party. It’s by far not just about seeing cars driving around in an oval. It’s a big party, and it’s actually a family affair.

In any case, be an “adult” and PARTY ON~ That’s my Sunday Fun Day!

I’m Curious

What are doing on your Sunday Fun Day?
